what are setbacks cole has in the book?

Cole has quite a few setbacks, especially on his initial trip to the island. When Cole first gets to the island, he burns his cabin down. He tries to swim to another island. This almost gives him hypothermia and exhausts him. On the island Cole fights the spirit bear and, of course, loses badly. Cole returns to the mainland but still has his attitude problems. It is not until Cole's second trip to the island when he makes most of his progress.
