What challenges did Cole face in the text?

There are so many. Cole has a lot of conflicts within himself. After his father beating him and his mother of no support, Cole finds himself alone. He lashes out at people like Peter. His only validation is through violence, intimidation and manipulation. Cole's biggest challenge is to let these feelings go. Cole needs to feel vulnerable again and trust that Garvey and Edwin will help him; Cole needs to discover who he really is. There are of course his physical challenges on the island but these are easier to overcome than his battle with himself.
