What did Edwin mean when he warned Cole that he was part of a "much bigger circle" on the island? What is the bigger circle?

Edwin is trying to communicate to Cole that the island is a place where Cole can discover his part in the natural order of things. Individual life doesn't exist separately, Cole's life is only a part of a greater whole. It is up to Cole to decide if he wants to work in harmony with it or constantly fight against it.
