What does cole mean when he says"I am okay" in chapter 12 in the book Touching Spirit Bear???

This happens after the Spirit Bear encounter. Cole knows that Garvey is really worried. He manages to grunt out "I'm okay". I think this might mean more than he physically survived. Cole might be saying that, for the first time in his life, he emotionally feels okay.
