What does the act of spitting at the spirit bear indicate about Cole? What is your opinion of this action and Cole at this point?

I've always felt that this act was a sign that Cole hadn't yet been beaten. The act of spitting contained just about all the defiance he had left. This was a turning point, a point at which I thought Cole still had some hope yet.
