I think when Cole lets Peter hit him at the end of the book really shows a change in Cole. Cole understands, almost empathizes with Peter's pain. Cole lets Peter strike at him because he wants Peter to release his pain. It is also Cole's way of atoning for his own sins. Cole is thinking about others and not himself.
