While Cole is lying on the ground, he kills something. What is it and why does he kill it?

Cole kills a caterpillar.... simply to show he has power over it.

Cole flopped his head to the side and spotted a small caterpillar inching over a rotted branch. He reached out his finger and crushed it. That would teach it not to crawl so close.
