why did the spirt bear come around more often the first time cole was on the island?

I think we can look at this in two ways. On a surface level the bear was checking Cole out. Cole was new to the island and he was inquisitive. In a spiritual sense, one mint say that the bear knew this was Cole's destiny. Cole had to encounter his spirit bear, the bear was their to help Cole discover himself.
