why does cole start sleeping poorly after garvey and edwin leave the island?

Cole feels restless after Edwin and Garvey leave. He finds a large piece of driftwood. He could make a canoe and escape. The pull of his old thoughts and behavior makes Cole feel uneasy. He has trouble sleeping.
