Why do Spuds eyes turn white?

In the Movie Trainspotting there is a scene where the Character Spuds eyes turn white. It's once they have all gone home from the club (The Volcano). It has been bugging me ever since i watched it years ago! Any help would be appreciated. Shane.

Spud is so high that his eyes have rolled back in his head.
