In chapter 2, How is the author trying to create suspense so far? Describe the techniques that he uses.

Jim Hawkins is quickly getting his fill of pirates at his Inn. The author uses these dark pirates to instil a sense of excitement and ominous mystery into Jim's life and the story. The characters are relatively flat but colourful at this point. The reader understands there is something afoot but keeps the details away from both the protagonist (Jim) and the reader. The violence between Black Dog and the Captain also give us the sense that this pirate world is unforgiving and something very valuable is hidden.
