Jim's attitude about Silver changes constantly because Silver's character changes throughout the story. Silver has numerous motivations and personas, he's willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish his task in finding the treasure. Ironically, Jim's presence also affects Silver in a way that he never expected, thus, the changes in the man contribute to the way Jim sees him.
