Before her marriage, Minnie Wright was a happy, lively girl, who sang in the local choir. After her marriage to John Wright, however, her life became lonely and unhappy. We never meet either John or Minnie is person, but from the conversations in her home, we can infer that her husband expected her to be the housewife and left her with no companionship or life outside their home. She was trapped like the bird in the cage.

John Wright, a local farmer, was well respected in the community, and he was seen as a good, dutiful man. On the other side, however, he was also a hard man, who neglected his wife's happiness. John paid little to no attention to his wife's opinions, and he prevented her from continuing to sing in the church choir.... her one enjoyment, something she loved.
