Morning at the Window is a poem about poverty. Eliot's speaker does not address poverty, but rather serves to illustrate the circumstances of poverty. The speaker paints a picture of devastation, despondence, and hoplessness. He describes the twisted faces, filth, and sadness. The frustration of the impoverished is evidences by tears, misery, and trampled roads.
In this poem, Eliot uses symbolism extensively. His images are universal.... balanced..... an example of "unified sensibility". Eliot's observations are objective and without emotion. These images, nonetheless, are intended to provoke emotion in the reader.
