Morrie influenced numerous people over the course of his lifetime and played many roles in people's lives. He was a teacher, mentor, friend, husband....... he was many things to many people. In context, the person most influenced by Morrie is the book's author, Mitch Albom.

It took sixteen years for Albom to keep his promise to Morrie.... a promise that he would keep in touch with his former professor in the future. Mitch, in fact, doesn't even contact Morrie until he sees him on television and learns of his battle with ALS. It is the news of Morrie's illness that sparks Mitch into action, and their reunion went so well that Mitch continued to visit Morrie every Tuesday for the next fourteen weeks. Over the course of their visits, Morrie teaches Mitch about life, and in doing so, influences Mitch's life for the better. The two men discuss love, death, culture, regrets, marriage, and the status of the world, and in spending time with Morrie, Mitch realizes it is time to re-establish lost relationships and pursue his dream...... not money. Mitch learns about compassion, being true to his word, and sharing himself without reservation. He learns that it is possible to both age and die with grace and dignity.
