On the first visit, why did Mitch stay in his car instead of jumping out and greeting his mentor?

Mitch is not focused on Morrie during the drive. He is on his cell phone with a producer about a piece they were working on together. As he approached the house, he spots Morrie on the porch. However, he does not get off the phone, instead finishing his conversation.
