Why, in morries opinion, is our culture so materialistic?

Morrie says, "We are too involved in materialistic things, they don't satisfy us. The loving relationships we have, the universe around us, we take these things for granted."

Morrie felt that materialism was a cheap and easy way people tried to find validation both externally and internally,

"Wherever I go in life, i met people wanting to gobble up something new. Gobble up a new car. Gobble up a new piece of property. Gobble up the latest toy. And then they wanted to tell you about it. 'Guess what I got? Guess what I got?.'

Morrie is telling us that as a culture, we spend so much time trying to better ourselves materialistically that we forget about the things that are important.
