Oh, this is difficult. James was a firm supporter of scientific research, and he also had a lifelong interest in paranormal phenomena. The Turn of the Screw presents both of these points of view in relation to both the "germ" and the "anecdote." Parts of the novel are drawn directly from scientific research that he'd been privy to; others came from his belief in the supernatural. Regardless, he gives us two points of view intermingled into one using both forms of deduction.
