Twelve Years A Slave

Compare the personal view of liberty of Solomon Northrop, and his testimony of how other slaves viewed liberty, with the view of liberty held by Levi Preston, a Minuteman from Danvers, Massachusetts. Preston expressed his view of liberty at the end of the American Revolution. According to Preston when asked about why he had supported the American Revolution, “what we meant in going for those redcoats was this: we always had governed ourselves, and we always meant to. They didn’t mean we should.”
