A man on board the ship at auction claims the Bible says the "African race" should be held down. Another man recites a Bible verse that reads, "Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be." Both of these verses allude to the Bible's support of slavery. In contrast, another member of the group cites the verse "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." These verses illustrate opposing views on slavery as interpreted by the group at the auction.
