How do Uncle Tom and Aunt Chloe raise their children? Are they strict or lenient? In what ways?

Also, what does lenient mean?

They raise their children to be respectful and ardent followers of God. Tom taught them to work hard but certainly was not cruel to them. I don't think he was overly lenient either. Lenient means "permissive, merciful, or tolerant."
