Both abolitionists, slaves and slave owners use the Bible to justify their beliefs.
At one point a clergyman defends slavery by quoting,
"Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be." (chapter 12)
"Don't the Bible say we must love everybody?" (Chapter 23)
