The Quaker settlement is presented as a refuge of enlightenment. They are good people who are kind and protective. The Quakers provide a juxtaposition between the evil interpretations of the Bible by slave owning whites and the more enlightened interpretation of the Bible by Quaker standards. This book then doesn't become a condemnation of Christianity but rather a condemnation of people who twist and pervert the Word for their own gain.
