Alfred and Augustine are nothing alike, except for the fact that they are both slave owners. Augustine is a romantic..... he is kind, and even plans to free Tom, though he dies before he is able to fulfill his promise. Alfred is a cruel, driven man, who rules his slaves with the whip. There is nothing gentle or kind about him.
