1) There were no schools for colored children in Malden, VA.

2) They had a difficult time finding a teacher for the school once plans were put in place.

3) The school was far from the furnaces where Booker worked.

4) Proper attire/ Booker's mother made him a cap

5) They had to create names...... legal names.
