After graduation, Washington worked for a short time as a waiter in a hotel in Connecticut and then returned to his hometown of Malden, VA to be a teacher. He was overjoyed to help the people of his community. Working 14-hour days, he not only taught his students to read and write, but also to keep themselves clean. The demand for education was so great that he opened a night school to serve students who had to work during the day. In addition to this work, Washington also established a reading room, started a debating society, taught two Sunday schools, and gave private lessons to several young men he wished to prepare for Hampton.
