Sarah Baartman is the main character.

Mother Showman serves as one of the novel's antagonists. He is a manipulative, side-show owner, who takes advantage of his workers' afflictions. He considers the workers his property.

Baron Docteur is also an antagonist. He uses Sarah emotionally and physically toward an end that will benefit his own objectives.
