Thoreau, like many people during the time period, dis not regard domesticated animals in the same way as modern society. The Collins family left their cat behind. Thoreau says he let it out into the wild but fell into a Woodchuck trap and " became a dead cat at last." His humor is dry and represents how many people felt about animals at the time.
