what do these details in the booming of ice tell us about the the natural world in general?

I believe the "booming of ice," as he describes it (he also uses the word whooping) is reminiscent of nature's "music." Music is everywhere around us and can be found in most anything. Sitting in the silent, stillness (and taking time to listen) affords us the beauty of music in nature...... it creaks, and groans, and breathes, and chimes...... it's rhythmic. He also describes it as "turning over in bed."
