What is meant by superfluous? And how does it apply here?

Comes from "Where I Lived, And What I Lived For" the section I'm talking about starts with "...I went to the woods because..."

Superfluous means not necessary. Thoreau wanted to live a simple life with nothing to interfere with his new way of life.
