He leaves the woods because the time has come. He left because he had learned something about the woods, but more importantly he wanted to see what tomorrow would bring. He wanted to be awake for the many "morrows" that he would experience. He learned much about a life of simplicity and had enjoyed this time; however, it was now time to move on.
