Catherine is quite the unconventional heroine. Her mother died in childbirth (her childbirth), and her father is devastated not only because his wife has died, but because as a doctor his reputation has come into question as well. Thus, he has little feeling for his daughter.

Another way in which she's different from the run of the mill heroine...... she's run of the mill. There's nothing special about Catherine; she isn't pretty, outgoing, witty, or intelligent. She's plain and ordinary. Catherine does however have a great personality and is completely honest. Traits important for any heroine.
