What does the boy think he might have done that caused the family to be in such distressing situations?

The boy often wonders if he did something wrong that caused his father to be taken away.... and that caused his mother, sister, and himself to be sent to the desert. He tries to think of how he might be to blame.... things like letting a pet goldfish die or breaking a chain letter.
