Phillip is charged with going after Lilia to bring her home before she makes the mistake of marrying Gino. He is too late, but is forced to make a return trip when circumstances allow him to instead bring back her child. While there, he falls in love himself with the lovely Caroline Abbott. Things go downhill from there. Instead of doing something to liven up the dullness of Sawston, Philip decides that nothing interesting will ever happen to him. Phillip tries to remain detached from everything in order to protect himself emotionally. Unfortunately this makes him rather passive and unable to stand up to anyone when he needs to. Phillip is the sort of chap that, in the name of safety, will let life pass him by.
