Why do members of Connie’s family make such brief appearances in the story? How might expanding their roles change the story?

This story is really about Connie and her internal conflicts which spill over to an external conflict with Arnold. Her family gives us a snapshot of her life enabling us to understand how and why she reacts to situations.
