How did the man break up the dog fight?

The man broke up the fight by walking in the midst of it and swing his coat around, successfully sending the dogs scurrying away.

Taking off my coat, I waded in. My yelling and scolding didn’t have much effect, but the swinging coat did. The dogs scattered and left.
