Little Ann was not been able to clear an unfrozen part on the river and has fallen into the icy waters. Billy thinks she'll die right there in front of him, so he prays. The he makes a sort of fishing pole, wades into the freezing water, and eventually fishes her out.

Little Ann might die right in front of Billy if Billy doesn't save her first from falling into the icy water.
