Where The red fern Grows- WHY does he tell us this story about it?

The story is told in flashback to tell the reader about the formidable almost magical time in his life. It was a time of bonding between a boy and his dogs. Family was valued and strong values were formed. This is why the book is an American classic. The dog fight in chapter 1 is a precursor to this.
