Where do you find the sources of the motifs, symbols and such

I am doing a music program based on the story of Where The Wild Things Are and I am interested in taking the 4 motifs (wolf suit, forest, wild things and hot supper) as four main part for the music composition itself, but I can't help but wondering where does this four main symbols came from? Was it definate or it's just one of your interpretation, thank you!
