how did the two men react to the wolves attacks...why did they react this way?

In Chapter 1? Well, the men are aware that the wolves are there, but they have nothing to defend themselves with so they build a fire. When the wolves attack, Bill and Henry throw fire at them, doing whatever they need to, in order to keep the wolves back. They are saved by a group of men searching for a coffin.
