why is billl important

Bill is one of two sled drivers in Part I who are pursued by a pack of hungry wolves. He is eventually killed by the wolves. Bill represents human frailty in the face of the natural world. Bill is certainly skilled in wilderness survival but always at the mercy of nature's strength.
