How does August's relationship with his family change over the novel?

I think Augie becomes more defined as a person. At the beginning of the novel, Auggie has never attended a "real school" or even really had friends besides his sister,and some of her friends. By the end of the novel, Augie is still close to his family but has branched out with his own friends and his own interests. This leaves more room for the family to explore new things because Augie isn't always the centre of attention.
