Jack helped Auggie overcome his shyness when he finally offered him true friendship. At first, he based his actions upon doing the right thing, thus, he did as little as possible to embrace Auggie's friendship, which left him feeling as if he did the right thing..... but also meant that he held back. He wasn't about to put himself on the line for Auggie. He played at being a friend..... but he wasn't a real friend. After hurting Auggie by talking behind his back on Halloween, Jack is forced to put himself out there. He has to put his own desire for popularity aside for the friendships he really wants to cultive. In the end, Jack realizes that it's Auggie's company he enjoys.
Why this is bad is because, well, (a) I don’t actually enjoy hanging out with the popular group that much. And (b) I actually liked hanging out with August.
