Mr. Tushman's speech is is about kindness. In the words of Mr. Tushman, “If every single person in [who read this post] made it a rule that wherever you are, whenever you can, you will try to act a little kinder than is necessary – the world really would be a better place." Kindness features prominently in this novel, as many of Auggie's struggles in life are linked to the unkind responses of others. At the end of the novel, Mr. Tushman makes an important graduation speech about the importance of being kind to all people, regardless of background, circumstances, or appearance. Indeed, by the final chapters, both Auggie and his fellow students have learned important lessons about how essential kindness truly is.
