Wuthering Heights

What considerations drive Catherine to accept Edgar's proposal, despite her love for Heathcliff? How does her decision relate to the status of women during this time period and the class structure?

Catherine's decisions completely illustrate the expectations of her time. She loves Heathcliff, there's never any question about that, but she also loves her social status.... the home, the parties, the acceptance. Unfortunately, Catherine doesn't love Heathcliff enough. I've never seen them as soul mates or star-crossed lovers. Catherine made her decision with her eyes wide open and married another man because he could provide for her in the way she'd come to expect (and enjoy). Note, your opinion may differ from mine!
