How the teachers treat the students in Chapter 5 of Year of Impossible Goodbyes?

The teachers are cruel to the students. Sookan is hit on the head for neglecting to bow low enough to an image of the Chinese emperor, she is forced to speak Japanese, and the students are not allowed breaks to use the bathroom..... many wet themselves. Students are not allowed to share their lunches, they are forced to make and stockpile simple weapons during recess, and they are beaten for the smallest infraction.
