After finding Jane Martin committing unspeakable acts with Albion Samweys on the street, the rector was severely scolding her but Anna tries to explain to him that the moment is not an appropriate time as she is quite disorderly. The rector then rants and goes on to say, "She has done knowlingly."
To this Anna replies, "Rector, you know that she has been."
What is the meaning behind this? This seems to be quite a big deal as the rector wishes that no one, especially Elinor, is notified of either of their 'outbursts'.
