The conflict is whether Young Goodman Brown believes that his wife, Faith, is in league with the devil. He ends up following her into the forest, sees her participating in what seems to be an evil congregation. When she comes back out of the forest, he cannot figure out whether what he believes about what he saw. Is his wife evil? Is her name "Faith" a mockery?
