how did the valley escape the radiation poisoning

I think the valley was protected by mountains and the poisonous air did not settle.

i think that it was protected by the mountains also or the announcers go ont he radio and tood veryone to evacuate and they just didnt hear it but i mostly agree with aslan about the mountains but some people didnt get to escape form it there was alot of people that died...
