The narrator gives a vivid description of the change in the weather. Within a few hours, it turns from the sun shining into snow "falling to the ground in large, whirling flakes." Eventually the storm is characterized as “a mighty blizzard.” The wind is personified as having the sound of "devilish laughter." The narrator also employs both metaphor and simile to add descriptive color to the scene.

When the storm ends and Aaron ventures outside to inspect the scene, he is struck by the beauty of the world around him. The narrator describes the landscape with almost religious reverence, personifying the moon and again employing metaphor to illustrate the calm, brightly shining sky.
